Kombucha - it's the future!

Karen Upston enjoying a yummy Kombucha at Reality Bites!

Have you heard of Kombucha? It’s been around for more than 2,000 years and is the drink the ancient Chinese called the “Immortal Health Elixir”.  It's quickly gaining in popularity in western cultures - and no wonder.... made from sweetened tea that’s been fermented by a symbiotic colony of bacteria and yeast (it tastes better than that sounds), it has a rich anecdotal history of health benefits including preventing and fighting cancer, arthritis and other degenerative diseases as well as numerous beneficial effects such as detoxification, increasing joint health, aiding digestion and... it also promotes a healthy gut!

If you also factor in its power to reduce the symptoms of fibromyalgia, depression, anxiety, and its rich anti-oxidant properties which aid in boosting the immune system, you just know you’re looking at a big glass (or jar!) of awesomeness!

We make our own Kombucha
at  Reality Bites. It's delicious and we love how good for us it is.
Come on into the Café today and try it out – it's only $5! Your body will thank you for it.

If you've tried kombucha, or have made your own, let us know us know what you though in the comments below :)

Yay! After 15years, the food pyramid has finally been updated! And it's GREAT!

After 15 years, the well known to us all food pyramid has been updated.
It's the Australian's making the change, with Nutrition Australia releasing the new pyramid; basing it on the 2013 Australian Dietary Guidelines.

We are proud to say that here in New Zealand we were a little ahead of the game with the NZ heart foundation releasing an update in 2013, ditching their pyramid altogether for a new shape.
The main difference between the two is that the Australian version gives Veggies and Fruit a different weighing. We love this! They suggest a 3-to-1  on the veggies to fruit ratio :)
It's great that some of the things we've all  known for some time are now being pushed into the mainstream.

Here are the key points from the updated guidelines:

  • Fat is no longer evil. (whoop!)
  • Whole grains are no longer in the eat most category and are replaced with veges and fruit (yay!), with grains pushed into second place.
(We know the debate about grains is heated. We are not going to get into it here - remember, this isn't a one size fits all recommendation)
  •  Meat, chicken, fish, legumes and eggs slide just underneath. These foods pack a rich source of protein, fat-soluble vitamins and essential minerals.
  • There is NO allowance for junk food in the Australian pyramid! (The NZ one still classes it as a food to 'cut back on') Nice work Aussies!

Here are the two versions, let us know your comments below :)

All part of the service...

...something very cute happened last week that made us laugh and made a customer extra special.

After thoroughly enjoying his meal and coffee our lovely customer ordered another coffee. He asked me for an extra hot coffee...on the docket I needed to describe for the barista where to find the customer. My note came out as below. It wasn't until Jaymie pointed out my attraction to his customer that I realised how my note read. Our man tells me it made his day!

Summertime goodies at RB Rangiora!

We are proud to announce that Reality Bites Rangiora are now stocking Tommy & James Nice Blocks and Nice Creams!

These are New Zealand’s first coconut-based ice cream. Nice Cream is not only dairy and gluten free, it’s also vegan, nut free and soy free so it’s especially allergy
friendly — and best of all, it actually tastes great!

In three creamy flavours — Vanilla, Chocolate and Banana Bean — the best part is they contain less sugar and half the fat of regular ice cream, making it delicious and guilt-free.

Because Nice Cream uses coconut cream instead of dairy, it’s also cholesterol free and contains all of the health benefits of the magical coconut, including easily assimilated medium chain fatty acids and lauric acid, which is good for the immune system. Turns out eating ice cream can be good for you!!!

Available now at Rangiora Reality Bites - Nice Creams are just $4 and Nice Blocks $3.50 -  we'll be bringing them out of the cafe on Dec 14th to Victoria Park  for The Rangiora Toyota Santa Parade! Come and see us there!

Summer never tasted SO good!

Christmas Raw Berry Tart

Raw Berry Tart for Christmas

One of my favourite summer foods are fresh berries! One of our favourite summer family activities is berry picking; be it at our local raspberry or blueberry orchard, going down to the river to pick wild blackberries, or simply picking strawberries from our own patch.

Years ago I would rush to my kitchen with my fresh berries, add sugar and create a blackberry pie or fresh raspberry ice cream. Now that I’m more informed about my food choices, I limit cooking with sugar, flour and butter. My favourite thing to make with our freshly picked berries is …raw berry tart.  Now I’m hoping that more people will enjoy this tasty treat!
The beauty about this recipe, is that by not cooking the ingredients, you are maximising the nutrients in food.  My favourite for this recipe is strawberries, but you can experiment with different berries. My second favourite thing is - it’s easier than making a normal tart, cheesecake or berry pie!

 Ingredients:

Base:
1-½ cups dates
1-½ cups coconut
¼ cup cacao nibs

Topping:
2-½ cups raw cashews (soaked and drained)
¾ cup of melted raw virgin coconut oil
3 cups berries of your choice
Juice and rind of 2 limes and 1 lemon
1-½ cups dried cranberries (soaked and drained)
Dash of sweetener of choice - my favourite is real maple syrup

Method:

Soak and drain dates, blend well with coconut then add cacao nibs.  Blend again to mix.  Press into a round springform tin 20 cm in diameter.  Place into freezer while you make the topping.

A note about the base: my favourite super easy base is simply dates and coconut.  You can then experiment by adding ground nuts or seeds of your choice.  The cacao nibs gives it a delightful crunch and toasty flavour as well as a super-food boost.

Process cashews and melted coconut oil until smooth.  Add remainder of ingredients and process until smooth and creamy.  Place on top of base and place in freezer or refrigerate until firm.

I would love to hear about your results! Contact me with your pictures, questions, ideas - anything at all! And if you run out of time to make it yourself, you can come and try it at the café; Reality Bites Cafe & Kitchen in Gables Arcade Rangiora.

 Have a delicious berry season!

Coffee or dessert?... Why not have both?!

affogato.jpg

Can’t decide what to have after you meal? You fancy something sweet, but you REALLY need that coffee hit? An affogatto may be the answer to your problem!

What IS an affogato I hear you say? Affogato is an Italian coffee dessert. The full name is really “affogato al cafe” or “drowned in coffee,” in Italian.  It is made up of a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a shot of espresso poured over.  And believe us when we say… it is absolutely divine.

So simple yet so good, our kind of dessert.

Affogato Recipe:
Pour a shot of espresso (or 1/4 cup of strong coffee if you don’t have an espresso maker) over a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
And that’s it!

You can add flavours to suit, such as ground vanilla, sprinkles (for the young at heart) or one shot of liqueur (Kahlua works well).
Affogato is always on the menu at Reality Bites, so why not treat yourself to something a little different this summer.
